World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. WED is hosted every year by a different city and commemorated with an international exposition through the week of June 5. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), also created in 1972, uses WED to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action.

From the year 2002 the CES organizing the WED programme. In this programme cash prize for Rs. 5000/-, a certificate for Prakruti Mitra and Rs. 1000/-, a certificate for Prakruti Bandhu awards were given for organizations and individuals every year at the district level. Subsequently, from the year 2007 same awards were given at the sub-division level. The Government of Orissa have decided to give away the award at the block level from 2009.

The Centre is organizing the state level World Environment Day with financial assistance from the Forest & Environment Department Government of Orissa. The responsibilities of the center to print the application format and sent to all 30 DESs. Organizing state level drawing & painting competition, Eco exhibitions, organizes the state level function on 5th June every year.
